One has been publishing research about environmental impact of generative AI datacenters since 2019.
The other has been going on twitter talking about how “chatgpt will replace the artists.”
One invents math that can recognize cancer cells.
The other applies it to security cameras for the surveilance state.
In general, the people most critical of AI have been those that trained their own one at home for fun, and knew from beginning how fucking overhyped it is.
I remember when the media tried labeling Luigi Mangione a techbro instead of a tech worker. Researchers and programmers are not techbros.
Yeah, I can also see how somebody who might see a use for AI in their own field isn’t exactly for up it stealing work in theirs or others.
There’s a difference between “hey, we can train/build this tool to be useful to us” versus “we’re cool with it ingesting everything and barfing out cat pictures”

One time the physics, engineering, and math students in my dorm all finished our homework assignments at roughly the same time (~2:30), so we all went over to the other building and made brownies to celebrate. We had some wild parties, as you can tell.
We clearly went to different universities.

If a separate industry to you gets ruined and you see the immediate effect as “i can get those products or services now”, you perceive it as a victory.
It’s the horrible, competition nature of how we live these days.

this has been a thing well before “ai” - search for a domain in arin or internic or others back in the day, pass on it, and tomorrow hrm it’s no longer available.
What a weird read of the situation. The existence of AI does not threaten the artistic process. Whereas this directly threatens the way science works.
