  • This was the answer to all beige/“off white” of the preceding decades.

When you sell a house, it needs to be as generic as possible, to appeal to as many people as possible. The staging furniture is suppose to take up the style slack. Except we made all the furniture gray, too. And, cars, for some reason.

    Fucking gray cars, WTH?

Gray is the color you get when you mix all colors together. It’s literally the average of all colors. The least interesting, exact center of blandness. It’s the definition of “normal”. But, it also doesn’t distract from your phone. So, that’s a plus… for people trying to sell you crap.

  • Being comfortable away from civilization.

I mean, very few people go off into the woods anymore without some way to communicate in case of emergency.

In the mid-80s I’d go off backpacking with friends for a week or ten days, and the only hope we had if we something went terribly wrong was the occasional park ranger, or other hikers. We might run across four or five other people on the trail per day, but some days no one at all. We’d set up camp by a pond and be the only ones there, and probably for miles in any direction. We never thought about it, because there wasn’t the option of taking a GPS, or phone, and we didn’t bother with a radio because we never needed one before, so we just never thought to take one.

It was fine. We had skills, we were prepared, we had each other. We had experience. That’s all we needed.

I suspect that is very rare now. It would be considered foolish. Fewer and fewer people have the experience of being that disconnected anymore.

  • I’ve never had a problem with the scanners, I use them every week.

Then, just a few days, ago…

I got something I don’t usually, it was supposed to be $24, but it rang up as $48. I was on the wrong hook, as it turned out. Anyway, I didn’t want it for $48, so the lady had to help me. She happened to be standing about five feet from me when it happened, and she saw it happen before I asked her. She was taking care of it on her little device.

Thing is, when I noticed it scanned incorrectly, I accidentally put the coffee I was holding in my other hand in the bag without scanning it and without thinking.

So, as soon as she canceled the sale for the thing, another error pops up, which flustered me again, and I kid you not, I did the same damn thing, I put ANOTHER item in the bag without scanning it and without thinking about it or noticing. Like the fucking idiot I am. While I was apologizing for the first unscanned item ANOTHER error appeared.

She was very kind, dealing with the village idiot.

  • I have occasional celebrity name blindness, or whatever.

Some days I can name every celebrity I see in a picture, and other days I can’t pull up a single one. I recognize the woman in the picture, but I can’t recall her name at the moment, but maybe I will be able to tomorrow.

A while back, someone posted a picture of the Rolling Stones, and I knew every name, but Mick Jagger’s.

Robert De Niro, Al Pachino, Christopher Walken, Matthew McConaughey are all names I’ve “misplaced” recently. At the same time, I can get Woody Harrelson, though--when I was commenting about Brothers.

This isn’t new, I’ve had this weird affliction my whole life, I think.

  • From one to the other in less than a year. Slippery slope much?

“We also need to read the code. My golden rule for production-quality AI-assisted programming is that I won’t commit any code to my repository if I couldn’t explain exactly what it does to somebody else.”

    One year later:

“But I’m not reviewing that code. And now I’ve got that feeling of guilt: if I haven’t reviewed the code, is it really responsible for me to use this in production?”

Techbros know people are lazy, so if their slopspawn machines work good enough, often enough, people will forgive the times it flies off the fucking rails and breaks everything. They know people will roll the dice and think “That won’t happen to me, this time. And, if it does, it’s still worth the ‘productivity gains’ I’ve already gotten.”
