  • I’ve never seen any search engine officially confirm this, but search across all search engines became terrible just a few months after the release of ChatGPT.
Which is why my assumption is that LLMs are being used to generate heaps of credible-looking, but ultimately worthless webpages. And search engines have to try to filter those out or their results would be even worse.

But then there’s no obvious distinction between a human-crafted blog and some spam webpage, which means the human-crafted blog is likely to be caught in the crossfire and get filtered as well.

Well, and on top of that, search engines presumably got hit by AI scrapers looking for training data, so that’s why I would assume, they now limit the search results to one page…

  • Ah yeah, it’s just a translucent overlay slapped on top of everything. It’s the fallback option when nothing else works.

Lots of apps that advertise lowering screen brightness below 0% just do that, so I thought that’s what you mean.

There is also a way to properly filter the colors, which doesn’t discolor things as badly, but I believe you need root for that, or for it to be built into the OS, like the “Extra Dim” option that various ROMs have.

I guess, there might also be ROMs where the manufacturer decided to limit how low you can set the brightness via the UI, even though the hardware would accept lower values. In that case, yeah, try what @hexagonwin@lemmy.today posted with writing to that file via ADB.
Maybe you can also do that via Termux somehow, if you’ve got root on your device.

There’s a foot/bike path out in the fields here, and man, people go completely stupid unleashing their dogs. Was walking there for an hour yesterday, saw like 8 dogs and none of them had a leash.

3 of them came running towards me, at a distance where their owners could not have intervened anymore.
The owners of 2 of them then also really struggled to keep them off the path as a bike came downhill.
And man, I really had to stop myself from kicking one of the dogs, because it ran right up to my feet.

  • Well, politics isn’t about finding the one principle to rule them all. The folks/companies that find restricting access to children important, probably don’t particularly care about some Linux devices being excluded. And other folks/companies find not restricting their Linux server really important, so that’s a compromise that can be made.

I imagine, they landed on specifically open-source being excluded as the more abstract rule, because open-source in particular has a problem here.
Anyone can download open-source software and run it. In most cases, there is no central backend, which could handle age verification.

And even if there is, it’s not really financially viable to offer that for anyone who downloads the software for free. Requiring payment to access the binaries or the source code would also effectively kill the open-source ecosystem, which is also not in the interest of most people.
