Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•So, has age verification really become the new normal?
6·6 days agoThey want it to be but what you’re seeing is just a tame version that’s been around for a while on porn sites and mature rated games. What scares people what bothers me is required identification. Having to share real personal data to “confirm” who you are.
We should all be fighting this …
While there is no way to completely protect your email I am big believer in minimizing vulnerability. It’s somewhat nice to know your email provider at least isn’t reading your direct emails. Most of my correspondence comes from auto reply emails. It’s the same I recommend to people still on Windows or MacOS. Use apps with no telemetry as much as possible. That to me would include email.

26·18 days agoSadly I’m use to it. I have my theories to why . But it is what it is. And I know it’s not all communities and people on here.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Am I crazy not to trust Chinese developed games ?
18·25 days agoThey have CIA they have espionage they have all sorts of things. They don’t have full state owned media. They don’t get by default access to your data. Companies can and have refused.
To say China and the US are the same for their citizens is just stupid …

15·25 days agoI have nothing against Chinese people. I have the same fear of Russian owned products. I have the same concern with US companies with seedy backgrounds. It’s purely an issue of government/ agency not the color of the skin.
And I’m sorry to say “china doesn’t give a shit about you” I don’t buy that. I’ve heard of some borderline ridiculous stuff governments do on citizens of foreign countries. The US included.
I got my answer in an albeit odd way. Yes they track. So I’ll keep avoiding.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Have you talked to Big Tech workers about their ethical qualms? Do they question themselves, think they're doing the wrong thing?
11·29 days agoMost people who work for these companies aren’t evil laughing as they break the toes of kittens for their corporate over lords. As many others have said most people go in with the best intentions. Do their best to help companies achieve goals but ensure their products do what customers want. It’s the upper management that comes in and enforces less than desirable programs and enforces eshitification.
It’s a challenging balance and sometimes you just outright lose. People work for these companies for great benefits, connections, skills and the clout that comes from working for huge companies.
I’d argue it’s no different than most roles for most companies. Even look at YouTubers and social media influencers. Some are out there trying to have fun and entertain people with stuff they love. Others are doing anything and everything to make a quick buck even that involves tricking people into storming the capital on a complete lie. Allowing people to risk their livelihoods in the process
I worked for a companies who sole purpose was to allow Fortune 500 companies to pay less then a person who worked at McDonald’s in taxes. You do your best to improve yourself and the company hoping you don’t cross some moral line.
